EPISODIO XXV: JARHEAD
Mac looked
at Christine in his eyes and he opened the envelope of the analysis he was
holding and he took it in his fingers the final response
"Whatever's
written up there, I want you to know that I will be by your side!"
Christine said stopping him.
Mac sighed
and he held his breath, Christine waited and inquired the face of her husband:
a small wrinkle in the forehead, eyebrows arched and the flicker of the lip
indicated her that he was afraid.
Mac
breathed a sigh of relief and he showed the paper to Christine
"Our
life can continue to be as it is!"
Christine
looked at the paper and she noticed a long list of -Negative-. She smiled and hugged Mac who found himself
with his back against the fridge in the kitchen.
He hugged
her and began to cry
"I was
afraid!" he admitted "I must confess that before my father was
discovered the cancer, I used to smoke a lot!"
Christine
jumped "What?" she pulled away from him and she looked into his eyes
"I haven’t I really thought that you..."
"What do
you believe is my own voice due to?"
"I
thought it had always been like that, until a few seconds ago!"
Mac sighed
"Open that drawer under the kitchen dresser!"
Christine
looked inside "There's just an old matchbox!"
"That's
what it looks like! Open it!" Mac invited her.
Christine
took in the fingers the two flaps of the box and she slid them. The inside
there was a half cigar and a cigarette
"You
had a treat for yourself! This is a Montecristo! "
"It
goes back to when I was in the Marines! You may not believe it, but that's the
only Montecristo I've ever smoked! I won it playing poker with a General! I'm
surprised you don’t do any comment on the cigarette of almost twenty-four years
ago!"
Christine
laughed "The cigarette of the Cowboy! What originality!" she fumbled
better in the box and found some cigarettes paper "What about these?"
"If
you search in the room, you will find also tobacco!" Mac said "When I
didn’t win at poker, I did cigarettes by myself!"
"When
did you give up?"
"May
26, 1990!" Mac said "There is a reason, if I have kept all: do not
start again!"
"It's
more than twenty years you've given up! Are you still afraid of falling back
into the habit?"
"I
confess that seeing Danny who smokes on the sly after work sometimes makes me
want to ask him a drag! Once, when I was working with Stella, I had to smoke
several cigarettes for a case!" Mac was about to say something else when a
cry stopped him "I'll go!" he concluded going out of the kitchen.
Christine
put away his all into the drawer of kitchen dresser and looked at Mac to enter
with Faith in his arms
"Good
afternoon!" Christine greeted her
"Ma!"
the girl said with a little scream
"It's
a joke! I was the only one to hear it?" Christine asked Mac
"I
think, instead, she has just tried to say that word!" Mac confirmed and
then looked Faith "I wonder if she repeats it now!" he pointed with
his finger Christine "Who is she?"
Faith
looked Mac laughing and she began to play with the blue tie around his neck,
uttering little cries of joy
"Amateurish!"
Christine laughed "You're the one who holds Faith for longer in your arms
and you cannot get what you want!" she hid under the table.
Faith
looked up from the tie of Mac and looked at where before there was Christine
"Ma!"
she cried opening her eyes wide.
Christine
appeared from under the table "Peekaboo!"
The girl
laughed and began to struggle in the arms of Mac
"Will
you ever say Dad?"
"A!"
the baby girl replied.
Christine
laughed "Appreciate the effort!" and she turned the television on
"How
did you turn on TV?"
"There
are Breaking News!" she said pointing to the screen "That typically
means work!"
Mac made
Faith sit down on the table holding a hand on her back to steady her and he
began to make her play with his tie
"I've
analyzed your invention for the sixth time!" he said breaking the silence.
Christine
turned to look at him while removing sound to TV, it was announced an already
solved murder-suicide.
Mac went
on, knowing that he had caught her attention "I haven’t found any fault!
It is well constructed as bomb and I was allowed to try it on a dog that they
wanted to suppress!"
Christine
looked at him "That one is a prototype of the new model that I'm secretly
working on and if anyone at the FBI were to become aware of this, I would pass
a lot of trouble! The version they are using is rudimentary and causes the
death you saw that day on the subway in three minutes. With the new model time doubles
but it's really more ingenious! I deleted one of the background defects:
deactivation through a small electric shock! It’s strange that you haven’t
found anything about that!"
"Meaning
that?"
"If
before it was enough that a piece of plastic on the wire of the vacuum cleaner
was missing and you rest your finger by mistake on it because the bomb was
deactivated, now, if you want to survive, you have to take the risk with a
powerful electric shock! Now you finally know how you could have saved that
man!" Christine explained watching the news "Mac you have work to do!"
"What
do you mean?" he said continuing to play with Faith
"Maxwell
has smashed the head of a judge in court and he escaped! Apparently the
professor, his girlfriend and half of his classmates were not enough!"
Mac looked
at the news and he saw a picture of a boy with black eyes and blond hair while
Christine turned on the audio again.
The hard
landing and misunderstood they could have make him attractive in that picture
if there had not been written -Killer of the silver hammer- and the woman
journalist had not continued to define him -Psychopathic- , -Depressed-, -Out
of Control-.
The
description of the subject continued while Mac went back to pay attention to
his daughter
"My little
one, it seems that the bad guys are willing to play exactly like you!"
Mac and
Christine exchanged a knowing look when the phone Mac, leaning on table,
vibrated.
Lindsay was
taking pictures of the scene while Sheldon and Angela were taking fingerprints
"Whose
was the idea to bring the hammer in the courtroom?" Flack asked entering.
Angela
lifted up "Not mine for sure!"
" Weren’t
you and Mac to follow the case?"
Sheldon asked
"Yes!
We spent a fantastic Easter!"
Flack
laughed "It would have been a Danny’s case! Don’t complain in this way!"
"If I
think that Danny is coming out of the hospital right now, it makes me angry!"
Lindsay said putting down her Reflex " Has someone warned Mac?"
"Jo
has decided to do that!" Sheldon said "We have eyewitnesses, the
evidence ... the escapee is missing!"
"Adam
told me that he made lose his tracks!" Mac said behind him "Sorry for
the delay!"
"Fortunately
you're here! Ben Maxwell has made a mess and..." Angela stopped to look
at Mac’s face lost on the body of the judge "Is it all right, Mac?"
"Yeah
sure!" he bent over the body and he asked "Has Isabella already seen
him?"
"Yes,
and she said that Peyton will arrive shortly to take him away!"
Mac rose
from the ground and observed the inquisitive looks of his colleagues
"I
think that will need to alert neighboring states too! He is adept at escape by
pretending to be a normal citizen! A fake ID and he'll be out of the state of
New York!"
Danny was
about to be discharged when Sheldon knocked on his door
"Luggage
ready?"
"Hey!
Sheldon!" Danny smiled leaving on the bed a sports bag with some clothes "Where
is Lindsay? "
"Struggling
with a case! I’m here in her place!"
Danny
nodded "I guess that’s Maxwell! I had to be the one to work on that case!"
Sheldon
shook his head laughing "You are going to be discharge! You've just passed
a horrible holiday and you already want to go back to work?"
Danny heard
voices in the hallway and he went to see.
Down the
hallway there was Ben Maxwell with a gun and the silver hammer in his hand who was
threatening one of the doctors "Do something strange and you're
dead!"
"Maxwell?"
Danny called him
"Stop
where you are! How do you know my name?" he said pointing the gun at him
"Calm
down!" Danny said stopping in the middle of the hallway "I saw your
picture on the television news and want to understand why they hunt you! I am
also on the run just like you!"
"Who
are you?"
"Tom
Walker! I was a drug dealer and then I killed a guy! I ended up in hospital for
an overdose!"
"They've
saved your ass by a hair, bro!" Maxwell laughed
"What
have you done?" Danny asked
"I've
done a bit massacres... first at school then my girlfriend and finally the
judge at my trial! My analyst warned me not to stop treating me! Too bad that
prison officials denied me drugs because they considered me perfectly right
mind!" he laughed and pressed himself against the wall to look at the
doctor "They still don’t know what I did before ending up in trouble! The
NYPD will have to go to Washington to testify at a fantastic trial!"
"What
are you saying?" Danny asked
"I
gave some money to a friend! I think he has already put in place his plan!"
Ben Maxwell smiled "At this time TV
news should announce it!" he broke away from the wall "I'm here to
take my medicine! Do you want to join me, Walker?"
Danny
smiled "With pleasure!"
At number
26 of Federal Plaza, a fire was devouring the building of the Federal Building.
Christine
had come out just in time with Dalia and Erika
"The
firefighters are coming!" Erika exclaimed "The only day that you come
at the office, they think they do us a trick like this is fun!"
"Dalia
give me the letter!" Christine ordered
"Your
husband knows who Ben Maxwell and Tobey Stone are?" she asked handing her
a half-crumpled envelope
"He
knows who is Maxwell!" Christine took the letter and put it in the bag
"where’s J.J.?"
“Around ...
I think he went to one of the whistleblowers of the case in which we were
working!" Erika replied mechanically.
Christine
dialed Mac cell phone number "It's me!"
"I'm
already in the car! As soon as I saw the news I feared the worst! What
happened?" Mac asked
"A
parcel bomb, it was from Washington! It was addressed to J.J.! We are in the
square and I would like you to investigate in order to find out who has carried
out the attack!"
The Mac
Avalanche nailed in front of the building and he went down by hanging up the
phone
"Are
you all right? Where are your colleagues?"
"Some
are still inside, others went to seek help!" Erika said "Take away
Christine! It's not safe for her to remain here! In Canada we didn’t kill our target!
If it turns out her secret identity it’s the end!"
Mac nodded,
Christine looked at Dahlia in the eyes and then she hug her
"Go
Christine! I remind you that Dalia and I have to go in Canada to finish what we
started!"
Christine
took Mac's hand and she made accompany herself to the car.
The two
stared for a moment at the burning building before getting in the car and get
away from there.
Danny and
Sheldon were excited as they entered the police precinct
“Look who
the cat dragged in! Look who's here! Good job guys!” Flack greeted them
"Right
from hospital to here!" Sheldon smiled "You should have seen the
great Danny’s recitation! He would deserve an Oscar!"
Danny
blushed delivering Maxwell to one of the policemen
"You
bastard of a cop! You will go to that fucking trial in Washington! You’re gonna
pay! You can bet on it!" the criminal shouted
"Yes,
of course! Sure!" Danny laughed
"So?
After the snake has bitten you, how are you? "Jaime asked coming up beside
Flack
"I
feel great and I look forward to seeing Lucy and Sid!"
Jo saw Mac
come with Christine in the office and she joined him
"They
called from Washington! Maxwell is involved with an FBI agent of New York in an
attack against our country!"
Mac and
Christine looked at her surprised
"I
guess for you, Christine, it is a shock, but we need you to know who it
is!" Jo concluded
"I'm
speechless!" Christine exclaimed "In the FBI in New York there is a
mole!? Why didn’t I ever noticed?"
"It's
not your fault! You were almost never present and then you're out of the loop
of the missions and you enter very little in that office!" Mac told her
protectively "Even what happened today is not your fault!"
Jo sat down
next to them "Don’t charge you with faults that you have not!"
"And
if the fink was Dalia?"
"Christine,
how can you think that a girl, who is completely inexperienced, is a
stoolie?" Jo asked her "I've read her file and I have searched in
multiple databases. She is honest! It wasn’t her!"
"Adam
is going onto the scene with Angela. Soon we will know something more!" Mac
said hugging Christine "Shall we go home?"
"But
you have to work! They need you!" Christine told him.
Mac looked
into her eyes "They can get by with it even without me! Danny is getting
good at solving cases!"
"You haven’t
to worry about that! There is me too for the case! The trial is a perfect
opportunity to prove how Danny has improved and if he really deserves a promotion
that Mac wants to give him!" Jo smiled.
Christine
looked at Mac and he explained to her "I wanted to promote him to Head of
the Lab! Jo will soon be on maternity leave and here we need a stable and
reference figure! My new job also engages me in the highest degree!"
Christine
nodded "I promise you that I'll find out who is doing double cross! I’ll
find out who is conspiring to destroy the United States!"
Lindsay
hugged Danny walking home
"You
were very brave!"
Danny
smiled "Did I become the new hero of our daughter?"
"You've
always been it!" Lindsay opened the door of the palace "You had to
see how much Sid has grown!" she said climbing the stairs and opening the
door "Kids! Look who's back!"
Lucy rushed
running to the door "Dad! You're home!"
"Hello
beautiful! I missed you so much! What did you do without me?" Danny took
her in his arms and swung her
"I
went to school!" Lucy said laughing "Sid crawls around the
house!"
Danny
looked around "Where is my little man?"
Lucy laughed
and pointed her finger at him "He drools everywhere!"
Adam and
Angela looked around
"I
cannot stand this stench!" she complained "What might that be?"
"Carbon
Monoxide!" Adam was taken to look for signs related to the explosion
"Listen, I think it’s better if we notify Jo of the fact that I cannot go
to Washington”
"The
FBI expects our full cooperation! I can take care of Cristina!"
Adam rose
to his feet "Why doesn’t Mac go there?"
"Because
Christine is one of the victims! Jo would go there, but she's pregnant!"
Adam put
his hand on the phone "I don’t feel like I can go there! I need to speak
with Jo!"
Mac saw Jo
come in his office while he was talking to Sheldon
"I
thought you were at home with Christine!"
"Yes !
However, Sheldon has found something about the sender of the letter attached to
the package and I rushed here!"
Sheldon
stood up from his chair and began to explain "Tobey Stone is a fictitious
name. Christine is controlling which agents have used that name in the FBI
database and if we are lucky we will get to put a face to a name”
"We
cannot rely on the residue left on the paper : there are my fingerprints, those
of Christine and those of the Dalia!"
Jo
interrupted Mac "Adam does not want to go to Washington!"
Mac paled
“What did he say exactly?"
"That
he doesn’t want! That the bomb must be rebuilt to perfection and that Angela cannot
do it alone!"
"I'll
go!" Sheldon said surprising both Mac and Jo "It’s better if Mac stays
close to Christine and you're pregnant!"
"It's
not an excuse, Sheldon! I can go to Washington without any problems!" Mac
said
"Until
a short time ago you weren’t even sure of your health! Don’t stress yourself! I
will guard Danny!"
Christine
lulled Faith waiting for the results of the research. She nibbles at her fingernails
of her left hand and it seemed that the baby could feel her mood.
The name
appeared on the screen was that of -Jonathan Jason Harris-
"J.J.!"
Christine exclaimed terrified "No! It can’t be true!"
She picked
up the phone and started calling
"Hello?"
J.J. answered
"Hello,
this is Christine!"
J.J. sighed
"Oh, Christine! Thank goodness you're okay!"
"Where
are you?"
"In
Washington!" he said in a worried tone "I am returning to New York
now because of what happened!"
"What
do you know about Maxwell?"
"I
know that he is the criminal on which your husband investigated on Easter
day!" JJ replied "Has something happened?"
"He
said something related a trial in Washington. Are you aware of it?"
"Yes!
A New York criminal is in business with one of our agents! Some police officers
who investigated him are going to be in town!" J.J. stopped for a few
seconds "You should do me a favor: I think that someone wants to frame me!
I received a coded message on the phone, if I dictate it to you, will you give it
to Mac?"
"Since
when do you like Mac?" Joked Christine
"Since
I realized that he really loves you!" he sighed "Are you there?"
"Yes!
You can start as well!"
Christine
began to write on one of the papers on the table and when she finished she
began to read the text:
-The follower of
Christ will sunk with the White Island!
The Judgment of God
won’t help his favored!
On the ledge of hawks
and from the hill the tragedy it will come!
To cut short, you lose
the Child of the handsome one who is no more strong like a lion!-
"It
makes no sense! What does that mean, J.J.?"
"I was
hoping you'd say it me! Your husband might understand something more!" J.J.
argued "How about meeting each other within a few days? Can you get
organized?"
"No
problem! I’ll warn my father to take care of the children tomorrow and then I'll
join you at the usual place!"
"I'll
wait for you!" J.J. he said quietly hanging up.
Mac looked
at Jo sitting on the chair who sighed
"Are
you okay?"
"I'm
worried! Adam has never contested an order!"
Mac looked
at her "Is there nothing else?"
"Sheldon
and I wanted the little girl had more names! What name do you advise me?"
"Which
names were chosen?" Mac asked
"Charlot
Stella. Adam has expressed himself in this way!"
Mac smiled
"Did you ask him today while he said to you that he wouldn’t have gone to
Washington?"
"Yes!
Which name do you tell me?"
Mac began
to ponder on it and a memory made his way into his mind.
He was at
the Marine Corps military base in California during Christmas period, he was
standing at attention in the dormitory while the General was talking
"You
have ten-minute phone calls each one and the time increases if you have reached
a certain degree this year! Who has served the country more will talk out more
with his mother or he’ll be praised out more by his father or he will canoodle
with his girlfriend by phone! Clear -ladies-?!"
"Sir
yes, sir!" the Marines had said.
Mac had
entered the phone booth and he had dialed the home number
"Hello
Dad!"
"Mac! How
nice to hear from you! Happy Christmas!" his father had said on the other
end of the phone "We have brought together the whole family, there is also
Uncle Todd with little girls! They all greet you!"
"I was
pleased to hear you Dad, now I gotta go... greets and embraces all for me,
especially mom! All right?" Mac had said rolling up the telephone wire
"I
understand, you're still Lieutenant and you have limited time! Next year try to
rise in rank!" his father laughed hanging up.
Mac had hurried
to dial a second number and he had been waiting then he had heard from the
answering machine
"You've
reached the messaging service for Claire Conrad, my parents dragged me by them
in New York for the holidays! Leave a message and will call you back much
before the new year! Oh right! Merry Christmas!"
"Hell
... Claire!" Mac stammered confusedly "I don’t know if... if you
remember me... it’s Mac Taylor! The Marine you met at the College cafe ..."
he gabbled "I'll be back in Chicago for New Year’s Eve and I thought that
if you don’t have any objection, we could celebrate together! Let me know with
a message, since I cannot get close to a phone if not for work. Merry
Christmas!"
"Major
Taylor! Time's up!" the General had barked from outside.
Mac was out
of the phone booth and he was headed to his dorm.
Once he
climbed on his bunk, careful to not treading the bed of the companion below, he
had heard the General rant "Lights out in a minute! Move your ass and see
to sleep!"
The lights
were turned off and Mac had remained shrouded in darkness staring at the
ceiling
"PSs
Mac! Did you call her? Did you ask her for New Year’s Eve?" the companion
had whispered from below
"I'll
spend the beginning of 1988 with Claire maybe. In the message that I have left
her on the answering machine I told her to write to me!" Mac had smiled
looking at the ceiling
"Have
you left her the address?"
"Oh
no! I'm a moron! I didn’t tell her where to write!" he had exclaimed
stomping his head against the pillow
"This
Christmas wasn’t good with you! I also believe that you will spend January 1
1988 alone to get drunk!" his companion had said laughing
"Who
is it to mess up?" the General had yelled approaching in the dark with a
flashlight "Major Newman, shut the fuck up and sleep or in addition to
downgrade you I make you clean the floor of the mess hall for the whole the
period of leave!"
"Sir!
I'm not the only one talking! Sir!" he had replied
"I
don’t give a blissful fucking thing! I caught you! I will punish you!" he
had stood up staring at the bed above" And you, Major Taylor! Lower the
sheet!"
Mac had
tried to control himself to come back serious, with poor results, as he was
carrying the sheet from the middle of the face under the chin
"Take
that arrogant smirk off the face now or I swear on my mother you'll join
him!"
Mac came
back to reality and smiled at Jo
"Claire!"
he said sitting next to her "Your daughter will be named Charlot Stella
Claire!"
"Actually,
there is still the name chosen by Isabella..." Jo pointed out seeing the
Mac phone vibrate "I think that someone wants to talk to you!"
Mac stood
up and answered "Tell me, Christine!"
"Mac,
I forgot the appointment for the vaccination of kids was today! I'm coming
there by you!"
"Great!
Who is Tobey Stone?" he asked
"They
want to trap J.J.! I have a nonsense message for you to read!"
"Jo
will look into it!"
Sheldon and
Danny were ready to board the plane headed to Washington
"I
have notion that this trial will be sheer hell!" Danny commented
"Come
on! Flack told us to rest easy! We simply have to say in which way happened the
capture of Maxwell and what we found on the site of the explosion!"
Danny haven’t
a face convinced and Sheldon sighed
"And
if Maxwell would get away with it because they found him mentally
unstable?" Danny said all of a sudden
"He
will not! You have arrested him! He didn’t take psychiatric drugs, but
medicines for mitigate the effects of drugs!"
Danny and
Sheldon also they made line in front of the gate
"We
were not supposed to take a private jet?" Danny asked
"On
the way back. You have a short memory!" Sheldon mocked him.
Mac was
holding Faith and Christine McKenna
"How
long has it been?" Mac asked Christine keeping his gaze on Faith that was
about to cry "Don’t cry baby! It's all over!" he tried to reassure
her.
Faith began
to cry and Mac hugged her laughing.
"Another
quarter of an hour and then we can bring them home!" McKenna, annoyed by
the screams of his sister, he tensed up in the arms of Christine who smiled at
him "Don’t worry, Kenny! It was just an injection!" but the child
began to cry "I beg of you Mac! Sing something!"
"Now?"
Mac looked around and noticed that some mothers with their children were
staring at them
"With
my voice Faith doesn’t simmer down anymore! When you started singing the last
time it worked!"
"You
know they used to call me -Golden Voice-!" Mac reminded her.
Christine
looked at him astonished "But if you have a voice that almost puts fear, so
much so that you sing well! Let me hear what you sang at the time of - Golden Voice
-!"
"You
asked for it! I don’t take on any responsibility!" Mac looked up and took
a breath "Like a good little girl, Faith! Enough now crying!"
"Sing!"
Christine intimated him
“From the
Halls of Montezuma
To the
Shores of Tripoli;
We will
fight our country's battles
In the air,
on land and sea;
First to
fight for right and freedom
And to keep
our honor clean;
We are
proud to claim the title
of United
States Marine”
Mac looked
around and several children had turned his attention to him
“Our flag's
unfurled to every breeze
From dawn
to setting sun;
We have
fought in ev'ry clime and place
Where we
could take a gun;
In the snow
of far-off Northern lands
And in
sunny tropic scenes;
You will
find us always on the job
The United
States Marines.”
A man stood
up and began to sing standing at attention
“Here's
health to you and to our Corps
Which we
are proud to serve
In many a
strife we've fought for life
And never
lost our nerve;
If the Army
and the Navy
Ever look
on Heaven's scenes;
They will
find the streets are guarded
By United
States Marines”
At that
time, other men who were there with their wives and children stood up and began
to sing with Mac and the other man
“From the
Halls of Montezuma
To the
Shores of Tripoli;
We will
fight our country's battles
In the air,
on land and sea;
First to
fight for right and freedom
And to keep
our honor clean;
We are
proud to claim the title
of United
States Marine!”
For a
moment all the doctors were put to listen with interest and the kids had stopped
crying
"Now
we can go home!" Mac concluded.
Christine
nodded distraught and stood up "Not at all -Golden Voice-!"
Jo had in her
hands the message left to her by Christine and an envelope that contained a
letter from her. She felt hesitant about what to do and when she saw Adam and
Angela she stopped them
"I
need you to look for me a meaning in this letter! The FBI doesn’t want our
help, but Christine needs it!"
"As
you wish, Jo!" Adam said
"That
letter instead?" Angela asked
"It's
for me! I must go to read it!" Jo said leaving them and closing herself in
her own office.
She began
to read the opening lines of the letter
“Dear Jo,
I’m writing you
because there are things that I can’t explain to Mac!
I must tell you about
my first mission!”
Christine
was standing in front of a door from the inside and a man had announced
"The next one!"
Christine
sighed "I have to go in there!" she had stood up and walked into the
office
"A new
face! I thought one of my agents would appear! What can I do for you, little
girl?"
Christine
had opened her mouth to speak and a sound like a moan had sent out "I
heard you're looking for agents..."
"Is it
so, but you do not seem the kind of girl to...”
"Sir,
grant me a chance! I will learn!" Christine interrupted him.
The man had
lit a cigar "Well! Tell me why you’re doing it!"
"I
need a lot of money quickly for someone!" Christine had explained
"Who
is this person?"
"My
brother! He's sick and needs an operation in order to heal him!" Christine
had continued
"All
right! You will follow a mini-boot camp, you will do your first mission and
then you will be placed in a team!" Christine had smiled and the man had
added "Are you aware that you can no longer go backward?"
"Yes!
I am willing to commit myself to defend my country!"
"That's
the attitude I like in a young American woman! Name, surname and age are the
only things that I need now!"
"Christine
Whitney, 18 years old"
The man had
written everything down on a piece of paper "Perfect! Come here tomorrow
morning and you will start your training!"
Jo kept
reading thinking aloud "Why do not you tell these things also to Mac? He
would understand you!"
“I still remember
the fragrance of the lounge where the
party took place…”
Christine
was dressed in a tight purple dress, long down to the floor, decorated with
silver ribbons at the waist. Her hairstyle consisted of a chignon wrapped at
the base in a lavender ribbon. The red lipstick gave prominence to her lips a
little more than teenage and black eye pencil with black mascara and lavender
eye shadow stood out her ice-blue eyes.
In the
midst of the crowds there was a millionaire. It was easy to guess that it was
that by his posture, hands behind his back, chest out, by Valentino pinstripe
suit he was wearing and from his cigar Montecristo Millennium Reserve Robusto
turned on. Advanced age was the only thing that made him a bad party.
Christine
had approached him and he had smiled
"Gentlemen,
I present you the young Maybelle Newton! This girl has a wonderful voice and
one day she will be a big star of the lyrical music!"
"Don’t
overdo it, Mr. Burns!" Christine had minimized
"But
my dear, it's true! Don’t you even agree Count De la Montagne?" he asked a
man of his age flanked by a tall and dark woman in her thirties
"Absolutely!
The next time you should definitely sing for us! Miss. Newton!"
The woman
next to him had added "They have made two in the morning! For us it's
time to go home!"
Soon the
other guests had left the salon.
Christine
had mentally rehearsed what JJ he told her -Prudence, speed and avoid arousing
suspicion during the flight-
She was
mentally brushed up on the role that Mr. Burns covered behind, his face
millionaire: money launderer.
"Maybelle!
You should smile more! I've brought you away from that horrible theater! The
next time someone sees you it will be on Broadway!" he had approached
dangerously as she put again on her lipstick "But now we have to discuss
the mode of payment!"
"I
thought that 20% of future earnings was ...”
He took her
by the arm "No! It’s not enough for me! My real charge is you!"
Christine
had widened her eyes when he had placed his lips against hers
"I
cannot! I do not want it!"
"Instead
I say yes!" the man had sneered
"Mr.
Burns! No!"
A slap hit
her on the right cheek and blood came out from her nose
"Fucking
little bitch!" the man had bellowed her getting up from the ground and
taking her up the stairs
"No!
Help!"
"Cry
as much as you want! So much so nobody can hear you!"
Mr. Burns had
opened the door of the bedroom with a kick and he had hurled Christine on the
bed.
“I’ve never forgotten
that feeling of being in trap!”
Jo paused
and took a deep breath "My God!"
She resumed
her reading quietly
“I remember the pain
and the bruises on my skin…”
Christine
was holding standing with difficulty, crossing the threshold of the house with
tears in her eyes, she had bound for a warehouse near there where homeless
people spent the night.
She had
opened with a key a sliding door and she had found herself in a room that
resembled those of prisons: an iron bed in one corner and a toilet and a sink
in the other.
On the bed
there were some clean clothes, mud-colored pants of a suit, light blue t-shirt
and denim jacket, and a note
“I’ll come to pick you up tomorrow in the afternoon!”
"Fortunately,
you aren’t coming here tomorrow morning!" Christine sighed.
She looked
herself in the mirror: the shapeless mass of matted hair was supposed to be
arranged exactly as the bruises on her arms and face.
She had
taken off the half ripped dress and she made to slide the icy water of the
sink.
It was no
longer covered with blood, but she continued to wash himself. She had dried with
an entire roll of toilet paper and she had put on clean clothes, finally she had
lied down on the bed that had issued a muffled squeak. She had closed her eyes
and she had started to cry.
“The next day J.J.
announced me that Mr. Burns was dead.
Mac doesn’t know the
whole story!
I hope you will
understand why I’ve never told him it! I am ashamed of myself!”
Jo finished
reading the letter and went out into the hallway
"Isabella!
What are you doing here?"
"Sorry
if I turned up here without notice Jo! I wanted to see you and tell you that I
chose the name!" Isabella smiled dissolving blond hair
"Will
you come into my office to talk about it?"
"No! I
have to go down..." she looked at Adam and Angela in the lab to look at
the letter together "For the matter of the FBI bomb have you discovered
something?"
"No!"
Jo smiled
"Sidney!"
Isabella smiled looking at the belly of Jo "Dad would be happy about
it!"
Jo laughed
and hugged Isabella "Yes darling! He would be honored!"
Christine
had in his hand disinfectant and gauze
"The
next time they do a you tattoo, you must purge it with lasers! You won’t come
to me with a razor blade to ask me to scrape it off! You risked infection and
what is worse, we have been at stake since Easter!"
She leaned
over and she began to treat the wound with a cotton swab
"A
scar would be left to me anyway! It was superficial and I knew you'd have your
hand steady!" Mac said trying to remain as still as possible
"I
liked you this afternoon, when you sang Marines’ anthem!" she took the
helm of Mac’s boxer shorts and she tried to lower them to him and he stopped
her "Is it my fault if I have to treat a little higher up of the pubis?
Don’t tell me that you're ashamed of your wife!"
Mac gave up
and let her do it
"Kenny
is crying!" Mac said hearing the baby and observing Christine’s fingers to
fix the gauze
"Redress!"
Christine said getting up from the ground and leaving the bathroom.
Mac began
to settle the first-aid kit and when Christine returned he heard her exclaim "Tomorrow
I will meet J.J. to resolve the matter of the mole! It won’t take a long time!
He told me to have some information!"
Mac looked
vexed at her "I want to come with you!"
"No
Mac! I need you in the lab! You have to analyze the information that I'll send
you personally!"
Mac washed
his hands and, as soon as he dried them, he stroked Christine’s cheek "I'm
just afraid that something could happen to you! I haven’t forgotten the dirty
tricks of J.J. on the fact that he wanted me dead!"
"He
wanted to test you!" Christine smiled at him making him take in his arms
McKenna "Could you go out with him? I have to pee!"
Sheldon and
Danny had arrived in Washington since a couple of hours
"It
annoys me that we have to wait until tomorrow to testify! I cannot wait to get
home to my wife!" Danny snorted
"I
also want to go back to Jo! Our presence here is helpful to incriminate an
attacker and to help the FBI to uncover their mole! We’ll be home soon!"
Danny
looked at the sky "TGIF!"

After breakfast, I turned on my pc, I checked the weather, but also today a very bad day.
Then a few curse for having to trash a file with some drafts of stories that I was processing, but then here is the light ...... you saved my day :) Thanks

ReplyDeleteHello!! I really liked this chapter! You are very good at bringing out the quality of each team member; In this case, it was nice to see Danny in the shoes of a criminal to make friends with a true criminal, but above all to see that this Maxwell didn't notice anything!
See you soon,
