EPISODE I: MERCURY TASTE
Mac looked
at the smoking lied on the bed and he sighed. He remembered that he had
promised to himself that after Claire he wouldn’t be tied the wedding. He smiled
remembering that he had pronounced his “yes” on March and this time, perhaps, a longer time period.
He looked
at the photos that shows him and Christine embraced, the same one that was on
his desk, and smiled again.
He took his
smoking and closed it in the wardrobe and he remembered one morning in almost mid-March:
the phone had started ringing and Mac was quick to look at the display to see
the number and he replied, "Mom?"
the voice
on the other end was a woman around eighty years "Mac, I have just arrived
at the airport! I’ll take a taxi and I'll join you at home! "
"Mom,
I'm getting married in three days! We agreed that you'd arrived the day before
the wedding! "Mac protested," I haven’t a bed ready for guests and
more than I'm going at work! "
"I
could not wait of knowing Christine and I decided to surprise you," the
woman said excitedly "Don’t worry, I will manage it! Go to work! I know
where you keep emergency key. "
Mac looked
up, with his blue-sky eyes, to the clock on the wall and finally to his wrist
for added security "Can I recall another time?” he said putting the dress
for the big day in the wardrobe "I'm really in a hurry!"
"All
right! Good job!"
To distract
him from that memory was a message from Danny "A new case on my day off!
Hurrah!" said writing down a note to Christine that placed on the table
and rushed out of the door that closed with a double-locked.
After Mac reached
his office, he sat at his desk and waited for the entry of Danny "Hey Mac!
Sorry if I ruined your day off " he said entering "Flack is looking
for you! He says they found a dead body in the Hudson”
"Can’t
you go there? I think that is also part of your job!" Mac said in an
authoritative tone
"Yes,
I would have gone myself, but ... I can’t ..." said Danny hesitantly
"What
do you mean?" asked worried Mac
"They
have under fire a man of about forty years, white, armed to the teeth who has
taken refuge into an abandoned warehouse and he screams that will only speak
with Detective Taylorof from the scientific of New York" said Danny
"They also said they he had done a morning bath in the river, before
noticing the police" he added
Mac took
off his jacket to put his bulletproof vest on his shirt “Inform Flack I'm
coming! "
"I'll
go," replied Danny coming out of glass door.
On the car
that were bringing Mac on the scene a tense atmosphere came out "Danny has
already explained you about the madman?" Asked Flack
"In a
certain sense ..." said Mac
"You aren’t
of many words today!" Said Flack
"I had
scheduled an appointment with my wife, Flack!" replied Mac trying to stay
calm "Sheldon is already on the place?" merely asked Mac shortly
after when the car stopped near the Brooklyn Bridge
"Yes,
certainly!" replied Flack looking Mac running towards an old building
where police cars were already stationed.
When he
arrived, he was stormed by colleagues
"We put in contact with him by a mobile," said a black policeman who
escorted him near a van stationed for the operation
"How
did you trace the signal?" asked the Detective.
The van
opened wide and Adam peeped "Hey Mac," greeted him letting him into
"Thank God you're here!" he said anxiously, "You know that he
had injured three policemen and it seems that in there is a fort of weapons and
... and ... "
"Enough
Adam! Put me in contact with him, "cut short Mac
Adam
followed the order immediately, without stopping typing on the computer
keyboard while someone was knocking at the van "Come in," he said
absently Adam
"Is
here Mac?" said Sheldon making himself instantly recognize from his tone
calm and firm
"Present,"
Mac whispered "Have you got news?"
"The
victim's name was Kate Rails, 26 years old and she is not drowned! No petechial
hemorrhaging!" concluded Hawkes crouching down in a corner of the
van," You are going to talk to the possible murderer?"
"As
soon as Adam puts me in contact ..." with his authoritarian tone Mac did
feel haste to resolve the situation
"Okay,
here we go!" concluded Adam satisfied.
The phone
rang once, twice, three times, the fourth replied a man with a voice hoarse and
haunting "Hello!"
Mac was
shocked for a while recognizing the voice, but immediately resumed control
"Detective Taylor"
"Detective
it’s a real pleasure to hear you again after thirteen years!" the man sneered
on the other side of the phone
"Reynolds!
You came out from less than a week, for all I know. Do you already want to go
back in? "Mac asked in a firm voice
"Funny!
For sure you'll say me that there is also enough evidences to accuse me of
murdering that girl! "
"You're
good at read my thoughts, Reynolds!" smiled Mac "Show me that you didn’t
done it!"
"Come
here alone and I will give you all the evidence you ask me!"
"Wait
an instant! I'll call you!" said Mac closing the call
"You
won’t go there alone!" Adam
shuddered
"What
do you propose? To turn to FBI? "Said Mac
"It
wouldn’t be a bad idea! We could negotiate!" chimed Sheldon
Mac remained
silent for a while' Sheldon, look out and let me call Flack from one of the
agents!" he made a shrewd smile "I have an idea!"
Mac got out
of the van with a mobile and walked alone toward the abandoned building "Do
you see me, Reynolds?"
"Of
course! I’m going down at the entrance, "said the ex-convict
Mac stopped
a few steps from the door, he was listening to the noises inside the structure.
The sound of footsteps coming down from the metal stairs left him guess that
Reynolds would soon arrived to open the heavy steel door.
The door
began to squeak mildly and from crack appeared the face of a forty year old man
covered with a thick gray beard, it was clear that he was pretending to not be
recognized from the police.
"The
gun!" Reynolds intimated pointing himself on the Detective "Throw
it!"
"If I’m
standing before you now, Reynolds, it’s because I know that you're not a
murder" said Mac throwing the weapon on the ground "At least, you
weren’t until this morning!"
"Come
in!" the man ordered.
Mac obeyed
him "Tell me what you were doing in the river!"
Reynolds
took a burlap sack near the door and threw it at the feet of Mac. The Detective
stooped to examine the contents "You came back after thirteen years to retrieve
the stolen goods!"
"Yeah,
Detective" concluded Reynolds "What can I say about that girl is that
she was close to the hole where I buried the Money!"
"It
isn’t all here right?" Asked doubtfully Mac
"No!
There was a parked car, a gray saloon car and its owner had a mask! I had to
give him the half of the money to save my skin! Then the guy threw her in the
river and set in motion the car. I tried to save the girl, but it was
late" concluded Reynolds
"Now
you have two options in front of you" said the Detective knowing that he
wouldn’t have obtained more information "Or you come out with me, or this
place becomes a living hell" he said seriously
"I
shouldn’t kill you! It would be a shame for Claire!" Mac was shaken by
those words.
Unexpectedly
Reynolds handed his hands toward him and let handcuff himself.
Outside,
Flack took him into custody while Mac turned to Danny who had just arrived on
the scene "I heard that you went alone! How did you get it! " asked
the glancing lightning to the criminal
"He's
afraid to finish inside and for lifetime" said Mac mockingly, after that he
fell silent for a minute beginning to reflect shaking his head "But it
seemed too easy ... I want him in the interrogation room and I also want you
control the security camera whether it works" he said, indicating the unit
on the building to Danny.
"There
is a good view of the bridge," he said, "it could have taken over the
concealment of the body," noted Danny. Mac, satisfied, patted him on the
shoulder and started to turn away "One last thing Mac," Danny called
him "She called Christine! She said that she feels sorry that you can’t go
with her to lunch today and they will try to repair it with dinner! "
Mac smiled
unwillingly, the mystery of the connection between Reynolds and Claire had
deeply disturbed him.
He left
Danny struggling with the work and began to drive to reach the morgue where Sid
was waiting for him to give additional information on the case.
"Mac ,
it is a pleasure to see you !" said Sid without looking at his face and
watching the hands of the victim "Do you want to know how our Kate
died?"
"Enlighten
me!" said Mac
“Mercury!
There was in great quantity in the stomach and in the blood" Sid said
slipping off his glasses
“Any idea
on how it could be there? "Asked Mac
"Usually
you're the one which has some glaring intuitions! But no! I have only found
traces on the corners of the mouth that seemed to be wood and paint. They are
in the hands of your team now! "
Mac sighed
and looked at the nails of the young girl "What about the blood clot under
the right ring finger?"
"I
don’t really know whether or not it’s connected with the murder, it is
certainly ante-mortem" said Sid tapping with his index the finger of the
victim "I'll update you soon!" he said, blinking his eyes that seemed
very fatigued
"Sid,
what's the matter with you?" asked Mac interrogator
The
pathologist looked at him in surprise "Nothing!"
"Do
not lie!" Mac said quietly "I've known you for nine years by
now!"
Sid opened
his mouth to start talking, but the words died in his throat. He breathed
deeply "All right! It's better that you hear it from me and not from the
letter you would have received short! »Mac looked at him with his eyes without
rush him "I am ill Mac! The doctors said that in six months or a year at
most...” to pronounce at whole that sentence had been impossible for him.
Mac,
already upset from having heard the name of his late wife by Reynolds, was
speechless at that discovery "Sid, I'm ... I'm so sorry" he felt
something wet run down from his cheek and then he realized that was a tear
"Mac
Taylor who is crying?" joked Sid "This is really an historic
moment!"
"Why?
I can’t express my grief for one of my closest friends and colleague?" he
said, passing his right index finger under his eyes
"But
now you have work to do!" said the pathologist playing with his glasses
"You'll have to interrogate a lot of people, you have to contact the
family of Kate and then... there's Christine! It’s said that you have given her
a hole again! It isn’t a thing to do with his own wife!" he finished with
a wink.
Mac smiled
"Call me as soon as you got something else" he said, turning and
taking his leave with a wave of the hand.
Flack was
finishing to register Reynolds when Jamie Lovato appeared in front of him with
an smiling air, too happy to be a day like the others "Hey Don! Are you
busy? "
"At
the moment, yes, but I can make an exception for you!" he said, moving
away from the desk and overlapping a lag
"My
brothers are in town and they want to meet you!" Said Jaime bending down
"So tonight, come to my house!"
Don
swallowed hard and a shudder ran through his back and the young Detective in
front of him noticed that "There’s something wrong?" she asked by
passing her hand through her long, soft black hair
"Well
... you've described me your brothers like people not quiet at all and very
protective!"
Jaime burst
into a big laugh "Just for this you afraid?" Don looked at her with
the look of someone who doesn’t understand what's so funny.
"Calm
down!" she said then "No one will kill you and then throw your body
in the Hudson!"
"Very
funny!" concluded Flack cynically.
Mac made
his entrance in the district and walked over to Flack, who was still talking
to Jaime "Don! Where is Reynolds? " he asked interrupting them
"In
the interrogation room, I was waiting for you for the start to the
dances!" he smiled, rising from his desk.
Mac and
Jaime greeted each other with a nod, then the three walked toward the
interrogation room. Mac stopped just before the door and stared at the two
detectives' “You Interrogate him, I’ll take over at a later stage! "
Jamie and Flack
looked at each other for a while “Is there something wrong, Mac? " he
asked coming closer
"I'm
not convinced ... the way in which we picked him up, as we found him ... it's
all too easy!" he said with a dark and melancholy tone
"There's
something else, isn’t it?" Jamie said, crossing his arms "Something
you don’t want to tell us!"
"He is
connected in some ways, to my first wife Claire and I want to know how!"
said Mac entering the room where he could observe the interrogation behind the
mirror. He crossed his arms staring straight at Reynolds then he turned his
attention to Flack and Jaime who entered the room.
"So,
Reynolds ..." Flack began by sitting and browsing through a dossier
"Burglary, armed robbery in a jewelry, assault and injury to a public
official and, to end a beautiful, drug dealing!" he said counting each
thing on the fingers of his left hand
"But
now is no longer enough!" interjected Jaime "Now there's a
murder!"
Reynolds
didn’t say anything , he flattened himself against the seat back looking
straight into the mirror in front of him and smiled maniacally waving a hand
"I’m glad to see you again, Detective Taylor!"
Mac in the
room behind clenched his teeth and his fists, his frenzy to learn more about
the link between Reynolds and Claire was invading him more and more.
"Why
is you not here to interrogate me?" Reynolds continued with his smile.
Mac's eyes became two slits of ice that glowed in the dim light of the room and
he thought that Reynolds should be lucky that he wasn’t physically in there at the moment.
"Detective
Taylor hasn’t come to your interrogation!" Flack said lying down on the
backrest "He told us to interrogate you and throw you in jail because,
assuming that you have not even committed the murder, you have injured three
policemen at five o'clock this morning, "
"Or do
you deny that too?" Jamie said leaning against the wall
"No!
It's true, I’ve shot them!" Reynolds said running his hands over his face"
but, as I have told to Detective Taylor, I haven’t killed anyone! "
Danny
opened without prior notice, the door behind Mac making him turn quickly
"You won’t believe it Mac! The camera has filmed everything but nothing
can be seen of the car!" he said handing him a dossier with photos "As
Reynolds said, our wonted man is wearing a ski mask, he is about sixty feet
high and he is certainly left-handed! "
"Adam
is trying to pick them up ... but the wind has erased the traces!" Danny
said "If you want some good news call Lindsay. It seems that the traces of
glass and wood that Sid found between the victim's teeth, she reconnected them to a particular
thermometer”
Mac smiled
"We have the murder weapon!"
"We
just have to find the missing pieces!" Danny smiled observing the inside
of the interrogation room "How are we going to take someone who wears a
mask of whom we don’t have a DNA to reconnect him to the scene?"
"This
is a good question!" concluded Mac seeing Flack and Jaime get out
"It's my turn!" said to Danny with a dark face emerging from the
small room and entering the interrogation room.
Flack and Jaime
took place alongside Danny who managed to exclaim "You know, I do not like
when Mac has that look!"
"It
puts me shivers! Just imagine who is to be interrogated, "smiled Flack.
Mac walked
up and down the room glaring at Reynolds' How do you know Claire? "
"No
questions about the case?" smiled Reynolds revealing his sharp and white canines
"The
one who asks the questions here, it’s me! Come on, answer me!” the deep and cold voice of Mac filled the room
almost making vibrate the table
"Before
she was yours, Claire was mine!" Reynolds smirked. Mac took a deep breath
with the nose and leaned against the wall scowling "Yeah Taylor! Moreover
I have given her something that you are not managed to give yet, that pleasant you are going to say that you are father!
"
"No, I
am a father and I can’t even be with Claire!" he said with a note of sadness
in his voice "She died in the World Trade Center!"
Reynolds
was surprised "What!" he burst into tears
"Don’t
feign to be sorry!" Mac snarled between clenched teeth
"Taylor,
I never gave up to love her!" He said through his tears Reynolds
"Even though we were only at the high school!"
"Then
why you abandoned her?"
"Damn
it! She was pregnant!" Reynolds snarled, standing up “I couldn’t take care
of her and the baby! I had no money for me! I had to take care of three
brothers and my father had died in an accident at work that year! "
"Claire
was fifteen years old at that time! She had to give up the baby for adoption,
and only one that knows what she had passed it’s me! "cried Mac
Flack and
others in the room behind were shocked and upset "What a bastard!"
Danny said
“More than
bastard I would say that is a son of a bitch!” said Jamie leaving doubly
speechless the colleagues for that expression.
Jo made
his entrance through the door "Mac was able to get something out of
Reynolds?" her look turned instantly when they saw the shocked faces of
her colleagues “What's going on?"
"You
are looking at the natural father of Mac's stepson!" Danny said indicating
Reynolds.
Jo stared
at the man for a few seconds with the same face of her colleagues "I can’t
believe it!" she managed to whisper at the end.
Mac moved
away from the wall and walked a few steps toward Reynolds "I don’t feel
any pity for you! You'll be in jail for a long time now! "
"What's
his name? You owe me that!" the man said falling dawn sitting
"For
twenty-nine years you didn’t give
anything about him!" Mac said lifting him from the chair "Let's go!
Your son will feel better without knowing who you are". He dragged him out from the interrogation
room and he gave him to two police officers to be taken to a prison cell.
Jo looked
at her colleagues in the eye and then she walked out of the room to reach Mac;
she saw him with a trembling hand on his forehead, that wasn’t the usual Mac
Taylor: it was upset and it was falling apart.
"Mac!"
Jo called him getting in a reply brief eye contact. She walked over to him and
shook his hand "Don’t let your past conditions you!" She said doing
more pressure "Claire wouldn’t want it!"
Mac nodded
and he seemed to looked back shiny but his voice betrayed him "Yes, you're
right!"
To distract
them both came a woman not very tall who was wearing a cream suit "Excuse
me ..." she said approaching "I'm looking for Detectives Taylor and
Danville!"
"We
are!" replied Mac already knowing who the woman was
"We
need to talk about your daughter Kate, Mrs. Rails," Jo said inviting her
to follow them
"No,
ma’am!" Mac said while making sit the woman in a private room "Your
daughter… was killed today" he said respectful of the situation and
noticing that the eyes of the of the victim’s mothers were wet "We deeply sorry to give you this news!"
Mac concluded
"Have
you discovered something?" the woman said by moving a brown hair strand
from her face and choking back tears
"We
were hoping you could tell us more!" said Jo passing her a handkerchief
"There was someone with whom she had a fight recently?"
"No! Basing
on what I know, I would say no! She had a lot of friends and I can also give
you their names!" the woman said trying to stop the tears that were
streaming down her face "I beg your pardon, but I am shocked! "
"We
understand it, Mrs. Rails!" Mac said "We are doing our best to arrest
the culprit!"
"Now I
am alone in the world!" the woman sighed "Kate was all for me!"
"You’ll
write a list of names of the friends of your daughter and then you’ll go home!
If we’ll find something we won’t hesitate to contact you!" concluded Mac
"Thank
you, Detective!" the woman said stepping out.
Mac and Jo
stared with a look of understanding.
"You
need to tell Christine what you found today, Mac!" Jo said to him by
patting him on the shoulder in the hallway
"I
know and hope that she won’t take it! She knows that Claire represented
everything for me! "
"You
have trust in her!" Jo smiled
Mac smiled
and hugged her then he walked toward the exit while Jo was preparing to go back
in the lab "Jo!" Mac called her before he left "Did I told you
that Stella will come back?"
The
detective smiled at his friend "Really?" she asked surprised. Mac
nodded and left the building.
Danny had
joined Lindsay to the lab "How are you?" he said kissing her on the
cheek
"I'm
Fine! Sid is with the child-minder!" she said smiling
"My
champion!" Danny laughed "He's a good boy and let work his
mother!"
"Turning
serious, I discovered that our killer may no longer be anonymous!" Lindsay
smiled triumphantly
"Surprise
me!"
"There
was a trace of blood on a shard inside Kate’s corner mouth and it doesn’t
belong to her!"
"But
you managed to find whose is it?" Danny said, observing that his wife that
shook her head and shrugged her shoulders "It's masculine, but can’t tell
you more! It isn’t in the CODIS! "
"And
you thought?" said Danny puffing.
Danny took
the list of names that Mrs. Rails had drawn "Anyway, I bet that the donor
is in here!" he began to read, one after another, the names and he
transcribed the boys ones on a white sheet.
Mac
listened patiently Christine on the phone, after putting the speakerphone,
seated at his desk "I guess that the new case must be complicated
..."
"I
need to talk to you Christine…" said the Detective interrupting her, his
voice was serious, severe and deep.
Christine
became frightened "Something happened Mac?" he didn’t answer but he
rubbed a hand over his face
"Where
to start?" he said after a few seconds
"Mac, do
you feel sick? I know that voice! It is typical of when you feel guilty for
something! Would you ... »
"No,
it's not that!" he interrupted her "I fear that you’ll get me wrong
later! We decided to build a relationship on sincerity and I want to be honest
with you through and through "
Christine
let out a "Ah," she silenced and began to listen.
Danny,
while he was researching on the list, realized that all the guys who attended
the victim were part of the post-graduate course in journalism, where she was
registered, and one of the names he saw was very familiar: Reed Garrett "I
already know you! But I don’t remember who you are!" he said loudly
"Did
you find anything?" Sheldon asked coming up to Danny
'Look!"
he said passing the paper to his colleague.
Sheldon
shivered and blinked several times, Danny didn’t understand what was happening
and when his friend decided to talk crossing his eyes he exclaimed "I don’t
want to be in your shoes when you will tell to Mac that his stepson is involved
in the case!"
"That's
why I seemed to know him!"
Lindsay
came up "Mac's stepson is involved?!"
Christine,
after having heard the whole story, she sighed "It must have been a hard
blow for you!"
"You
have no idea! Luckily there’s you!" he said closing his eyes
"-As
long as we both have life ...- or something like that!" she said
Danny
noticed Mac on the phone but he had to knock on the door equally "I'm
sorry, but I have some important updates on the case!"
Mac said
"I'll call you later Christine!" but Danny stopped him "It's
better if you hear it too Christine, it relates Mac in a direct way and he
might need moral support!" Mac invited Danny to speak with a nod “Reed
Garrett, your stepson, appears on the list of Kate’s friends” Mac was silent
staring into Danny’s eyes "The boys are twenty on that list and Flack is
going to get them for an interrogation, if the DNA of Reed should match with
the one we found in Kate’s mouth...”
"I
know what could happen by myself!" Mac concluded staring at nothing. Finally he sighing by saying "I want to interrogate
him!"
"I met
Reed and he isn’t a murder! It will undoubtedly be a coincidence!" said
Christine on the phone “Mac! everything will be fixed! "
The police
district was full of boys between the ages of twenty-five and thirty years. Mac
he entered looking for the stepson without success.
Flack ran
to meet him 'Mac! Reed is not located! Yesterday evening went to a party and
never returned! The Garrett have already made the missing person report, they
were here a while ago and they said that they tried to get in contact with you,
but you were already out of the office! "
"I
will call them later," he said, looking at the boys' they were at that
party too? "
"It
seems so!"
"I'm
going to make a couple of phone calls," said Mac from outside.
Flack's
phone began to ring without notice and he was surprised "Detective Flack
police of New York you are talking about," he replied tiredly, "Where
are you? We will pick you! "He said frantically writing down the address
of the dictation on a piece of paper and ran outside" Mac! I know where
Reed! Let's go! "
"I’ll
drive!" Mac shouted going up in his car.
Lindsay had
come home for lunch with her there was also Sid "I wanted to know your son
and to see how much he resembles you!"
"You
were kind to accompany me! Danny must check again that the DNA on the fragment
is not of one of the guys who are now in the district, "Lindsay smiled,
putting her keys on the table at the entrance.
The babysitter
came forward smiling "The baby is sleeping! I left something warm for
lunch and I have already prepared the milk to give at the baby as soon as he
wakes up! "
"Thank
you Rosita! See you tomorrow!" Lindsay replied with gratitude
"Wow!
Congratulations for being so well equipped!" Sid smiled" But I do not
understand why you're back to work so soon! "
"I'm bored
at home, even if you can’t get bored with Sid!" Lindsay smiled at Sid.
A cry broke
the quietness and Sid smiled "I think he woke up ...»
"I'm
going to see ... indeed! Come with me! "
Mac was at
Trinity General Hospital with Flack and Reed Garrett. The boy had received a
blow on the head and his DNA matched with the one that was found in the mouth
of Kate. For that night he would remain under observation.
Mac
rummaged in his clothes and was able to find a wooden thermometer with a corner
chipped and without a single drop of mercury inside, he knew immediately of
being in front of the murder weapon and he delivered it, thanks to a policeman,
at the crime lab. Then he walked towards the bed where Reed was lying “How do
you feel? " he asked softly
" Leaving
aside the headache, I’m fine!" but he was beginning to cry and to bite his
lip "I wasn’t able to protect her! Is it my fault if Kate is dead! "
"What
are you saying?" Said Mac
"I
know who had killed her!" he said turning his head slowly towards Mac
"Paul Steiner!" tears on her face didn’t arrested "He was rotten
drunk and he had tried to rape her! I had intervened and then I had fallen to
the ground ... " he burst into a strong, liberating and terrible tears.
Mac laid
him a hand on his shoulder "She was more of a friend, wasn’t she?"
Reed nodded
while continuing to be sick emotionally "It was all for me! I promised her
that after the master's degree in journalism and the start of the career we
would get married!" he turned to the window "I wanted to talk with
you about her! I wanted to introduce her to mom and dad!" he sobbed louder
"And now I have lost her forever!"
In the
afternoon, Lindsay was back to work and she took charge of the analysis on the
thermometer. She smiled when the results came to her "Danny the analyzes
show that the DNA and fingerprints belong to Paul Steiner. He’s in our hands!
"
Danny
smiled, "Thank you, honey!" He kissed her and left the lab "By
the way!What did Sid say?"
"He said that
our son looks like me!"
Danny
snorted "Another one who doesn’t understand anything!" and he walked
toward the killer apartment in the Bronx. The building in which Steiner lived
was dirty and rotten. Danny was on the stairs with two policemen and stopped in
front of a door with peeling paint "NYPD! Steiner open the door
immediately!" Danny shouted with a gun in his hand.
Inside the
apartment he heard noises of an overturned chair and a window which was opened.
Danny and the police thought not twice to break through the entrance and break
into the apartment "The fire escape! Get him from outside!" Danny
shouted rushing the chase to thirty feet of height.
The eight-floors
which divided Steiner from the street weren’t many, the policeman of science,
little more than thirty-five, knew it and he had to hurry. He gritted his teeth
and began to skip several steps to capture the murder before, but Steiner,
seeing the situation was becoming more complicated, when he missed only a
flight of stairs, he decided to jump over the railing, he landed badly on a
police vehicle and tumbled to earth. Danny was upon him in a moment "You had
miscalculated! You're going to jail for a long time 'nice man!”
Flack was
finishing a conversation on the phone in the hospital corridor, he hung up and
started walking towards the room of Reed "They wanted to give you the
fault of the murder but they didn’t succeed! Your DNA is randomly finished on
the victim's mouth" he smiled getting in "We have just arrested Paul
Steiner! There are all the necessary evidence to send to prison”
Mac calmed
down on hearing the news and was happy to see appear adoptive parents Reed and
Kate's mother.
"You're
not alone Reed" he whispered in his ear before standing up from the chair
beside the bed "and I will be among the first to be near you" He
walked to Mrs. Rails who was entering next to Garretts "We took the real
murder of your daughter Mrs. Rails, he is at the central now”
The woman
with tears in her eyes shook the hand of Detective "Thanks for everything!
I knew it can’t have been Reed! When they called me to tell me that he was
suspected, I didn’t want to believe it! He loved my daughter! "
"He
still love her and it won’t be easy! He feels alone and abandoned just like you!
Promise me that You may be close to each other and you will talk about Kate,
she mustn’t be forgotten! "
Mrs. Rails nodded
and Mac walked away.
Walking
toward the exit, Mac remembered an episode of six months before: he had seen
Christine, who was leaving the hospital with his mother, Millie Taylor, "What
are you doing here? What did happen?" he had asked worried
"Your
Christine had an indigestion problem few hours ago, but now it's fine!” Millie
smiled to his son "Fortunately, there was me at home!"
"Thanks
Mom!" He said embracing her, then he turned to Christine "Don’t scare
me like this time anymore!" he said kissing her forehead
"What
are you doing here?" she asked curiously crossing the entrance with Mac
and his mother
"After
having solved the case, I went to the doctor for a checkup!" Mac took the
hand of both and headed toward the car "The case is closed and we could
get married as planned!" he had sentenced.
"Mac!
Wait!" Flack shouted as chased him, distracting him from his memory
"You have driven, so I need a lift to the district because around twenty
minutes I have a date with Lovato!"
Mac smiled,
"Come on! For sure I don’t want replace my dinner with Christine with your
funeral! Jaime spoke to me about his brothers and it is better if you don’t
make them angry! "
Flack was
left to the district near his car and waved Mac "Good luck!" Mac
shouted to him starting the car in the direction of the deposit to the garage of
the Crime Lab.
Arrived
under Detective Lovato’s house, Flack got out of the car and he began to tap
the fingers of the right hand on the car’s door that was still open, hesitating
on what to do.
Meanwhile
Mac, who was just arrived home, was on the phone with Danny
"Ok
Mac, do you want to bet on Don?" laughed the blond Detective on the other
end of the phone
"Do
your offer!" said Mac closing the door
"A
hundred dollars that he runs away as soon as he sees them! Adam is monitoring
the situation, it is stationing right outside the house! "
"Perfect!
Let us trust in Adam and tomorrow we charge!"said Mac, closing the call
and lying down on the sofa waiting for the return of Christine.
